1. 3709 She shoots, she scores: The Growth of Women's Sport in North America.

This paper will argue, the future holds the prospect that the new generations of women competing in previously male-dominated sports will shatter the barriers that have held back these athletes for decades. In the Canadian context, interest in women competing in previously "male" sports peaked with the silver medal performance of the Canadian Women's Hockey team at the Nagano Olympics. With this victory, many Canadians - and particularly the Canadian mass media - for the first time paid attention to the "novelty" of women's hockey. In reality, of course, women's hockey is far from a novelty act, as women have been playing hockey in Canada since at least 1890. 4 pgs. No bibliography provided.

3. 3373 On the Discrimination of Females in Sports: The Causes & Prospects.

This paper will examine a number of articles taken from contemporary journals that deal with forms of inequality. Two central areas will be examined. First, social inequality in terms of sports participation will be examined. What will be analyzed, and from a 'functionalist' paradigm, are those variables which contribute to the lack of participation in some sports from those individuals in the lower strata, and in turn, some of the general 'causes' of this situation. The second general area which will be examined, is 'inequality' in terms of media representation. Toward this end, the focus will be derived from critical theory in order to discern how it is that certain inequalities are perpetuated in culture, 'via' the media. 15 pgs. 31 f/c. 12b.
